Introducing the ZWO CAA — Frame Astro Images with Ease

The CAA from ZWO is here! CAA stands for camera angle adjuster, otherwise known as an electronic rotator. This helpful tool allows you to orient your astrophotography camera into any composition you want! It’s the perfect tool for astrophotographers who are looking for high precision & repeatable camera orientations every clear night.

ZWO CAA Features Overview

Overview of the features found on the ZWO CAA

ZWO CAA Review

Agena Astro affiliate Peter Zelinka published this ZWO CAA review video:

Designed for Use with the ASIAIR

ZWO has made controlling the CAA a breeze in the ASIAIR app, making it the perfect choice for ASIAIR users. You may also control the CAA using the ASIStudio desktop app or even use it with ASCOM driven software like NINA.

Automatically Recall Previous Camera Rotations

Astrophotographers know how frustrating it can be to lose the rotation of a project you’re working on. The CAA allows anyone to precisely frame the perfect astrophotography composition and repeat it night after night.

That’s right — when paired with the ZWO ASIAIR, the CAA allows you to automatically recall previous camera orientations with ease. It will determine the camera’s orientation based on plate solving of past images, and then the CAA will rotate your image train to match it within 0.1 degrees. This means you can easily image multiple targets per night at different rotations and easily swap back and forth!

Compact & Lightweight Design

The CAA weighs a mere 1.02 lbs (465 g), which keeps the total weight of your image train down. The body dimensions measure just 5.3 x 4 x 0.6 inches (136 x 102 x 16.5mm), making the rotator small enough to fit on nearly any telescope setup!

Ultra-Precise Positioning

The ZWO Camera Angle Adjuster features 0.02° / step resolution, allowing you to achieve an incredible positioning accuracy of under 0.1°. This allows you to easily repeat previous rotations, letting you get more keepable data night after night!

High Speed Rotation

The CAA can rotate at a speedy 7.5° per second, meaning it can do a full 360° rotation in well under a minute! Thanks to this fast rotation speed, you can find your target and be imaging with your planned composition in minutes.

Easy Cable Management

With just one USB-C cable needed to send commands and power the CAA, you can streamline cable management and reduce the risk of cable snags.

ZWO CAA Ports & Connections

The CAA features two ports: a USB-C port for power supply and data transmission, plus a hand controller port for connecting the EAF hand controller (sold separately), which lets you rotate the CAA manually when not connected to the ASIAIR or a computer.

ZWO CAA Compatibility Chart

Here at Agena Astro, we always want to provide the most helpful information. We created an exclusive Compatibility Chart for you to check if your imaging rig can work with the ZWO rotator.

Camera Guider Filters Compatibility
ZWO Duo or Air series camera (N/A, built in) ZWO filter drawer/wheel  ✅ Compatible
ZWO Pro series camera Guide scope ZWO filter drawer/wheel  ✅ Compatible
ZWO Pro series camera Off-axis guider ZWO filter drawer/wheel  ⚠️ May be compatible*
Third-party cameras Guide scope or OAG Any filter drawer/wheel  ⚠️ May be compatible*

How to Use the CAA with an Off-Axis Guider (OAG)

Using the CAA with an Off-Axis Guider can be tricky, as the OAG typically occupies the same section of the image train as a CAA, but it is possible with some setups!

  • Petzval telescope users may be able to use both an OAG and CAA in the same image train if they can still reach focus with both installed. This is because Petzval telescopes are not limited to 55mm of back focus like other telescope types. However, the 55mm (or similar) back focus requirement will usually still apply if you plan to use an additional reducer/flattener on your telescope. If you’re using a CAA + OAG + filter wheel/drawer (with only the required adapters), be sure your Petzval telescope has a back focus of at least ~75mm.
  • Reducer / flattener users may be able to insert the ZWO CAA before the reducer / flattener in the image train, which enables the use of a CAA + OAG + filter wheel/drawer. However, this method should be used carefully as the load capacity of the CAA is only 8.8 lbs (4 kg). Because of this and the smaller clear aperture of the CAA, this method is best for APS-C sized sensor or smaller cameras. We only recommend this method for advanced users as as additional spacers / adapters may be needed to reach your specific back focus.
  • Removing the filter wheel / drawer should also allow for using both an OAG and CAA in the same image train. One Shot Color camera users can typically still use filters if your telescope features a built-in filter drawer. We only recommend this method for advanced users as additional spacers / adapters may be needed to reach your specific back focus.

Third party cameras may be compatible with the ZWO CAA. Certain brands of cooled cameras feature the same 17.5mm back focus distance as ZWO cameras and M48 or M54 threads. In these cases, the ZWO CAA may be compatible with the setups above. It may also be compatible with an Off Axis Guider, but we only recommend this method for advanced users as additional spacers / adapters may be needed.
